Hot water is roughly a quarter of the average Queensland household's energy bill — the single biggest energy decision most homeowners make. Yet because systems fail suddenly, the replacement usually gets chosen in an afternoon under pressure. This guide is what we'd tell you across the bench, with no brand agenda.
The Four Contenders
Electric storage
Cheapest to buy and install, dearest to run on full-rate power — though off-peak tariffs and solar panels change that equation substantially. Tanks last 8–12 years. Still a sensible choice for smaller households and rentals, and the simplest like-for-like swap.
Gas — storage and continuous flow
Continuous flow gas units never run out of hot water, suit bigger households and last 15–20 years serviced. Running costs sit between electric storage and heat pumps, and depend on gas prices. You'll need a natural gas connection or LPG bottles — and a licensed gas fitter for the install and compliance certificate.
Heat pump
Currently the running-cost winner on the Gold Coast. Heat pumps extract warmth from the air — which our climate supplies generously — and use around a quarter to a third of the electricity of a resistive electric tank. Paired with solar panels they're close to free to run. Purchase price is higher, but Queensland and federal incentives narrow the gap considerably.
Solar thermal
Roof collectors with a boosted tank. Excellent performance here, but higher install cost and roof requirements mean heat pumps have largely taken their place for new installs — worth considering mainly when replacing an existing solar thermal setup.
Sizing: The Mistake Everyone Makes
Undersizing is the number one regret we see. As a rule of thumb for storage systems: 1–2 people, 125–160L; 3–4 people, 250–315L; 5+, 315–400L or continuous flow. For continuous flow, count simultaneous outlets — two showers plus a kitchen tap running together needs a 26L/min unit or better. Teenagers count double. That's not a joke.
Salt Air, Warranties And Placement
Beachside suburbs from Main Beach to Coolangatta are hard on externally mounted units — salt corrodes casings and heat exchanger fins years early. Positioning the unit out of direct onshore exposure, rinsing coastal grime off annually and choosing marine-rated models where offered genuinely extends service life. Check warranty fine print too: many require periodic valve servicing to stay valid.
