How Tracer Gas Detection Works
The suspect pipe is drained and charged with tracer gas — 5% hydrogen, 95% nitrogen. Hydrogen atoms are the smallest in the universe, so they escape through even a hairline fracture and rise vertically through soil, concrete, tiles, pavers and pool surrounds to the surface. We then sweep above the pipe route with a detector sensitive to a few parts per million of hydrogen. Where the reading spikes, that's the leak — typically within a few centimetres.
That vertical rise is what makes the method so precise. Water from a leak can travel metres along a pipe trench or under a slab before surfacing, sending diggers to the wrong spot. Hydrogen goes straight up. The reading marks the failure itself, not where its symptoms happen to appear.
Completely Safe For Your Home And Pipes
The 5/95 hydrogen-nitrogen mix — known industrially as forming gas — is classified non-flammable, non-toxic and non-corrosive. It is used worldwide in food packaging, doesn't react with pipe materials or drinking water systems, and dissipates harmlessly into the atmosphere once the test is complete. After testing, lines are flushed and returned to service immediately.
