A drain that blocks once might be bad luck. A drain that blocks every few months has a cause: something inside the pipe catching what flows past. Until that cause is identified and dealt with, you're not buying repairs — you're renting your own plumbing back one blockage at a time.
The Usual Suspects Under Gold Coast Yards
Tree roots
The number one cause we camera between Coomera and Coolangatta. Figs, umbrella trees, camphor laurels and even palms send feeder roots into the joints of older earthenware sewer pipes, where they thicken into nets that catch paper and waste. Cutting roots restores flow, but they regrow from the same entry point — usually within 6 to 18 months.
Fats, oils and grease
Hot pan fat poured down the sink solidifies on cool pipe walls further down the line, narrowing the pipe like a hardening artery. Kitchen lines in units and older homes with long horizontal runs are especially prone.
Wipes and 'flushables'
Wet wipes do not break down like toilet paper, whatever the packet says. They snag on any rough edge — roots, scale, a joint — and rope together into blockages that defeat plungers entirely.
The pipe itself
Bellies (sags) that hold water and waste, cracked or offset joints from ground movement, and partial collapses in old earthenware all create permanent catch points. No amount of careful flushing fixes a broken pipe.
Prevention That Actually Works
- Scrape and bin pan fat; wipe greasy pans with paper towel before washing
- Bin all wipes — 'flushable' is marketing, not plumbing
- Use sink strainers in the kitchen and hair catchers in showers
- Keep thirsty trees at least 3–4 metres from sewer lines — or choose root barriers
- Run hot water for 30 seconds after doing greasy dishes
Breaking The Repeat-Blockage Cycle
Step one is knowledge: a CCTV camera inspection after clearing shows exactly what's in the pipe and where — roots, grease, a belly or a break — with a locator marking its position and depth from the surface. Step two is matching the fix to the fault. Root intrusion with sound pipe: scheduled maintenance jetting, cheap and effective. Localised damage: a targeted excavation and repair. Multiple entry points or fragile old earthenware: trenchless pipe relining, which rebuilds the pipe from the inside with a 50-year design life and no destroyed driveway.
