The 7 Warning Signs
1. Warm spots on the floor
The most telling sign of a hot water line leak. If a patch of tile or concrete feels noticeably warmer underfoot, hot water is likely escaping directly below it.
2. The sound of running water with everything off
A faint hiss or trickle when all taps are closed means pressurised water is escaping somewhere. At night, put your ear near internal walls and floor wastes.
3. Cracks appearing in tiles or walls
Moisture changes the volume of the soil supporting your slab. New hairline cracks in tiles, cornices or render can indicate movement caused by water beneath the foundation.
4. Damp carpet or lifting vinyl
Moisture wicking up through the slab shows first at floor coverings — dark patches on carpet, delaminating vinyl planks or cupping timber boards.
5. Mould or a musty smell you can't find
Persistent mould on skirting boards or inside built-in wardrobes, despite cleaning, points to a constant moisture source below.
6. Hot water system running constantly
If the unit cycles or the pilot runs hot with no hot taps open, hot water is being drawn continuously by a leak on the hot line.
7. An unexplained jump in your water bill
Slab leaks run 24 hours a day under mains pressure. Even a pinhole can add tens of thousands of litres to a quarterly bill.
