Every leak detection technology has a blind spot. Acoustic listening struggles with very small leaks that don't generate noise, deep pipes under thick slabs, and noisy environments. Thermal imaging needs a temperature difference to see. But there's one method that works when everything else has failed: tracer gas leak detection.
How Tracer Gas Detection Works
We drain the water from the suspect pipe and fill it with a tracer gas — a mixture of 5% hydrogen and 95% nitrogen. Hydrogen is the lightest and smallest molecule in existence, so it escapes through even a hairline fracture and rises vertically through soil, concrete, tiles and pavers to the surface. We then sweep the surface above the pipe with a highly sensitive gas detector that responds to hydrogen at concentrations as low as a few parts per million. Where the detector spikes, that's your leak — typically located to within centimetres.
Is The Gas Safe?
Completely. The 5/95 hydrogen-nitrogen mix is classified as non-flammable, non-toxic and non-corrosive. It's the same forming gas used in food packaging and industrial applications worldwide, it doesn't react with pipe materials or drinking water systems, and it dissipates harmlessly into the atmosphere after the test.
When We Reach For Tracer Gas
- Very small weeps and pinholes that don't make enough noise for acoustic detection
- Deep or well-insulated pipes where sound and heat can't reach the surface
- Low-pressure and drainage lines that can't be acoustically pressurised
- Pipes under thick concrete, pavers, pebblecrete or pool surrounds
- Confirming an exact excavation point before cutting a slab, and verifying repairs afterwards
Why It's Rarely The First Tool Out Of The Van
Tracer gas testing takes longer than an acoustic sweep — the line must be isolated, drained and charged with gas — so we use it where it adds certainty rather than as a default. On a typical Gold Coast callout we start with pressure testing to confirm the leak exists, acoustic and thermal scanning to narrow the zone, and tracer gas to lock in the exact point when the stakes are high: expensive floor finishes, structural slabs, or leaks that have already beaten another contractor.
